📱 Longer TikTok Videos are Officially Here to Stay
TikTok is charting a new course in the content creation sea, bidding adieu to its short-form video roots. The platform's latest move, rebranding its Creativity Program as the Creator Rewards Program, now requires videos to stretch beyond the one-minute mark for monetization. This pivot reflects a broader shift in TikTok's strategy, nudging creators towards longer, more engaging content.
The change is significant, not just in length but in substance. Payouts will now hinge on an "optimized rewards formula," rewarding originality, viewer retention, search value, and audience interaction more generously. It's a response to past grievances over paltry earnings from the original creator fund, with TikTok promising heftier wallets for its content crafters. Indeed, the platform boasts a 250% surge in creator earnings over the last six months, doubling the ranks of those pocketing $50,000 monthly.
TikTok's flirtation with longer formats blurs the lines between itself and traditional platforms like YouTube, pushing creators towards horizontal videos and richer, more substantial content. This shift seems set to populate our feeds with content reminiscent of the pre-TikTok era, steering the platform into uncharted waters.
👨🏽💻 New MacBook Air Soars to New Heights with M3 Chip
Apple just unveiled the latest evolution of the MacBook Air, now powered by the M3 chip, elevating the iconic laptop to new performance peaks. The freshly minted 13- and 15-inch models boast a significant speed bump, claiming to be "up to 60 percent faster" than their M1 predecessors. Coupled with up to 18 hours of battery life, these laptops are not just workhorses but marathon runners.
Starting at $1,099 for the 13-inch and $1,299 for the 15-inch model, these sleek machines support dual external displays—a first for MacBook Air when closed—bright Liquid Retina displays, Wi-Fi 6E, and the much-loved MagSafe charging, along with a couple of Thunderbolt ports for all your connectivity needs.
But the M3 chip doesn't just turbocharge the MacBook Air's speed; it also enhances its brainpower with an upgraded 16-core Neural Engine for optimized AI tasks. Plus, its built-in GPU now supports mesh shading and ray tracing for all your graphical needs. Not to mention, the new models come with a crisper 1080p FaceTime camera and are equipped for spatial audio and Dolby Atmos, making them less than half an inch thick powerhouses of productivity and entertainment.
The new M3 MacBook Airs ship on March 8th. You can order them now.
🎵 Tidal Hits the Right Note with Higher Quality, Cheaper Subscription
In an unexpected twist that'll have music lovers singing, Tidal is tuning up its subscription model to be both simpler and more wallet-friendly. Wave goodbye to the days of choosing between Tidal's HiFi and HiFi Plus plans, because as of April 10th, they're harmonizing into one single tier named, simply, "Tidal." And here's the kicker: it's only going to set you back $10.99 a month.
This isn't just a minor tweak; it's a full-on encore performance. Subscribers will get all the high-res FLACs, Dolby Atmos mixes, and other audio goodies previously reserved for the pricier Plus tier. That's right, if you were shelling out for HiFi Plus, your subscription is about to get a lot cheaper.
But before you start your victory dance, there are a couple of beats to be aware of. For the DJ-savvy, using the app's DJ integration feature in the last 90 days means an extra $9 monthly unless you untick that option. Also, Tidal's hitting pause on its military / first responder discounts and its free tier, pushing users towards a paid subscription come April 10, 2024.
With Apple Music and Amazon Music Unlimited already offering lossless quality at a similar price point, Tidal's move could be seen as a play to stay competitive—or at least to stay on the playlist. As Spotify still hasn't added lossless streaming to its repertoire, Tidal might be looking to steal the spotlight before the rumored "Supremium" plan drops.
Despite Tidal's attempt to remix its subscription offering and keep the company relevant amid a 10 percent staff cutback, it's clear they're not skipping a beat in the streaming music game.
